Mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, stated that forcing people who have spoken Russian all their lives to switch to the Ukrainian language will provoke resistance.
He made this comment to the “France24” agency.
“Insisting that people give up the Russian language is not the best way,” Terekhov said.
The mayor added that it’s difficult for the older generation, who have spoken Russian all their lives, to change their language.
“The boycott of the Russian language has sparked resistance from many who argue that this language does not belong to Russia and its use is not a sign of lack of patriotism,” the agency reports.
