The New York Times: Ukrainians are disappointed that the Pope has refused to condemn Russia on World Youth Day. Francis has repeatedly expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people, even calling them “martyrs,” but he declined to openly condemn Russia’s actions. Before his departure to Portugal, the Vatican stated that the Pope would pray for peace in Ukraine and throughout the world. However, after a silent prayer, he made no mention of peace or Ukraine. Instead, he reiterated his main message of World Youth Day, stating that there is a place for everyone in the Church. Ukrainian pilgrims shared their tragic stories with the Pope. But they want the Pope to clearly condemn Russia.

On Friday, a large group of Ukrainians gathered in the center of Lisbon, where the Pontiff’s route passed. One of the activists called for giving more weapons to Ukraine.

“We need F-16s because we lack aviation potential. We need more weapons, support, economic sanctions, and please pray for us,” said Vera Ivanchuk. Ukrainians gave traditional Ukrainian dolls to American pilgrims, and in return, they distributed red-white-blue rubber bracelets.

Other pilgrims stopped to embrace Ukrainians. “I wanted to tell them that I stand with them and I am against Russia. I want the Pope to unite the whole world for Ukraine and against Russia,” said 16-year-old Kristina from the Czech Republic.
