October 15, 2023Among children aged 5-6, a study was conducted, revealing that only 15% of Kyiv’s preschoolers actively speak the Ukrainian language. 65% can use a mix of Russian and Ukrainian words or primarily speak Russian while incorporating some Ukrainian words. 20% of preschoolers have almost no understanding of the Ukrainian language.
This information was shared by Andrey Kovalev, the founder of the organization “Spilnemova.”
Currently, 50-60% of parents with preschool-age children in Kyiv are trying to speak more with them in Ukrainian. This trend became noticeable after February 24, 2022.
When children enter school, they begin to understand the Ukrainian language, but it doesn’t necessarily become their dominant language. Kyiv students predominantly remain Russian-speaking, using the Russian language during breaks and in a predominantly Russian-speaking environment.
“The Ukrainian school only ensures that the child acquires Ukrainian as a passive second language. Only 10% of the memes used by Kyiv teenagers are in Ukrainian, while 90% are in Russian or English,” Kovalev explained.
