“Decision-making centers in Kyiv could become the new target of ‘Oreshnik,'” – Putin says
November 28, 2024Mike Waltz, the future national security advisor to newly elected President Donald Trump, has been weighing several proposals for ending the war in Ukraine in recent days.
This was reported by CNN, citing sources.
The details of the strategy are still being worked out, but Trump is likely to insist on a ceasefire in the early stages to “temporarily freeze the conflict” while both sides engage in negotiations. Trump wants greater involvement from Europe and NATO in supporting Ukraine.
Among the options being considered is a proposal by General Keith Kellogg, whom Trump has named as his candidate for special envoy to Ukraine. Kellogg’s plan calls for continuing military aid to Ukraine on the condition that it participates in peace talks with Russia, and for denying Ukraine NATO membership for a long period, in order to bring Russia to the negotiating table.
Another plan under consideration is from Richard Grenell, which proposes creating “autonomous regions” in Ukraine, though he did not explain in detail what this would look like.
Another idea is to allow Russia to retain the territories it has occupied in exchange for Ukraine’s NATO membership, though sources say this idea is not very popular among Trump’s inner circle.
Waltz also discussed the Ukraine issue last week with Jake Sullivan, President Joe Biden’s national security advisor.
Earlier, Waltz stated that the Trump administration will begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine in January, with the involvement of European countries.
