05.12.2023 - 14:14Former advisor to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Alexey Arestovich, has once again stated that ending the war in Ukraine is only possible through global negotiations between the West and Russia, which would establish new rules of engagement in Europe.
In his opinion, joining NATO will not assist Ukraine as the organization “does not function” and is a “remnant” of the no-longer-existing Yalta system that emerged after World War II.
“We need to engage in a very serious conversation about the real interests of the parties and the reasons for conflicts, and rebuild the system from scratch,” Arestovich stated.
At the same time, he believes that Western leaders are incapable of such discussions, and Henry Kissinger, the “last politician capable of thinking like an adult,” has passed away.
“Everyone tried to ignore Russia’s real interests—resulting in war. And they were incapable of conducting this war. Meanwhile, Russia, gritting its teeth and losing a significant number of people, is conducting this war. Awkwardly, but it’s ongoing,” Arestovich remarked.
Therefore, he believes it is necessary to “seriously engage in dialogue with Russia” and “stop discussions about democracy and dictatorship.” However, Arestovich sees no such inclination either in Ukraine or in the West.
“Consequently, the war will continue. And if we continue conducting it the way we are now, it will continue in a manner we won’t like,” he added.
