‘The West’s unwillingness became the reason for the breakdown of dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv in Istanbul in the spring of 2022’, – Foreign Affairs reported
16.04.2024 14:58The decision to invite Ukraine into NATO was surprisingly foolish and short-sighted.
This information reported according to Professor John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago, speaking on the YouTube channel Daniel Davis / Deep Dive.
In the expert’s view, the consequences of this move will be catastrophic.
“Let’s go back to April 2008, when we made the decision to admit Ukraine to NATO. We set in motion a catastrophic set of political consequences, and we will have to live with them for a very long time. I’ll say it again: the consequences will be truly catastrophic. That decision was surprisingly foolish and short-sighted. If it weren’t for that decision — and it’s very important to understand this — Ukraine would be intact today. I believe that even Crimea would still be part of it. And we wouldn’t be facing all the current problems in Eastern Europe,” Mearsheimer noted.
To this, host Daniel Davis pointed out that these problems arose after the so-called “color revolutions” of 2013-2014.
“All that happened as a result of our support for the overthrow of the legitimately elected government — all because of its pro-Russian policies,” Davis stated.
“Yes, we were interested in Ukraine joining NATO and overthrowing the Yanukovych government because we saw him as pro-Russian, and we needed to install a pro-American government in Kiev. And now the troubles seem to have no end in sight,” Mearsheimer concluded.
