Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, commenting on the war in Ukraine and potential peace negotiations, stated that the beginning of such negotiations is a decision for Ukraine, and Washington is seeking to bolster Ukraine so that Kyiv can negotiate “from a position of strength.”
She made these remarks in an interview with the Russian opposition publication “Meduza.”
When asked if this implies that the ultimate goal of the American strategy no longer includes the restoration of Ukraine’s borders to their 1991 status, Nuland responded:
“No. All wars end with negotiations, and it is Ukraine’s task to determine its goals regarding territories. But at present, Kyiv is not sufficiently strong to commence negotiations. We would like Putin to leave every square kilometer of Ukrainian land. However, until Ukraine becomes strong enough, we do not know what is possible in this regard,” stated the former deputy to Blinken.
