Hungary is the only EU country whose citizens are dying in the war in Ukraine.
“Hungary borders Ukraine, this is not just a war, but on our border… In Ukraine, there are Hungarian citizens from the Magyar minority who are fighting on the side of the Ukrainian army and dying. We are the only EU country whose citizens are dying in Ukraine,” Orbán said.
He explained the reason for his stance on the war in Ukraine.
“We are at a crossroads: either isolate the conflict and find a diplomatic way, or deepen into the war. If we allow Ukraine to strike Russia with weapons also supplied by Italy, it will have consequences in the form of a strong reaction from Russia, and the risk of NATO intervention will be just one step away,” Orbán said.
The Hungarian prime minister considers the EU’s strategy on this issue to be mistaken.
“The EU strategy is also tactically unsuccessful, we do not realize that we are playing with fire… We should ask ourselves what the strategic interests of Europe are and call for a ceasefire. All this is wrong, and public opinion wants peace, not war,” he explained.
In May, Orbán reported that Hungary is working on “redefining” its NATO membership status, so it could potentially refuse to deepen its support for Ukraine through the military bloc.
