12.06.2024 - 23:29The Swiss government is tightening the rules for granting temporary protection to Ukrainians.
This information reported by the local publication Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
The upper house of parliament has decided that only those from occupied territories or regions where active hostilities are ongoing will be eligible for the temporary protection status “S.”
Additionally, if the amendment is adopted, the Swiss Federal Government must revoke the protection status of those refugees whose last place of residence was in regions “under Ukrainian control and where no hostilities are taking place.”
The new rules also stipulate that Switzerland will not provide protection to third-country nationals fleeing the war in Ukraine.
The publication notes that the Council of States made its decision just as the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, arrived in the parliament hall.
The corresponding decision now needs the support of the lower house of the Swiss parliament.
Previously, Warsaw adopted new rules for the legal stay of Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Media also reported that the main refugee reception center in the Netherlands is denying asylum to men and childless couples.
