During a speech on Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden mistakenly referred to his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, as “President Putin.”
“Now I want to pass the floor to the President of Ukraine, who is as brave as he is determined. Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin,” Biden said.
After realizing his mistake, Biden corrected himself and reassured the audience that he intended to “defeat President Putin.”
“President Putin. He must defeat President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin. President Zelensky,” Biden then corrected himself. “I’m so focused on defeating Putin that we need to worry about that.”
Biden was speaking at an event in Washington dedicated to the adoption of a joint declaration in which more than 20 countries pledged to support Ukraine.
