17.07.2024 13:32The EU leadership’s refusal to negotiate with Hungary and threats of a boycott will not deter Budapest from continuing its peace mission to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
“All pro-war politicians in Europe jumped up immediately after this peace mission began. They threatened us with a boycott, refusal to negotiate with each other, and threats of being ignored. You know, such attacks do not discourage us from continuing our peace mission. They encourage us to make more efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution of this war in Ukraine,” Szijjártó said.
This response came when asked if the Hungarian presidency in the EU received any real threats with practical steps from EU leadership following Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s peace mission.
Szijjártó noted that the Prime Minister’s administration is already accustomed to such attacks.
“We are a patriotic government, a non-mainstream government, and we are under financial sanctions from the European Union. So I don’t understand how they can threaten us more than they already do,” he added.
Viktor Orbán, after meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived in Moscow on July 5 for talks with Vladimir Putin. The leaders discussed issues related to the Ukrainian crisis, among other topics. According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, his visit was driven by his country’s interests and a desire to achieve peace in Ukraine. He called finding a solution to the conflict in Eastern Europe his Christian duty.
In response, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, stated that Orbán does not represent the EU on the international stage and does not have a European mandate for his visit to Russia, even though his country is holding the presidency of the Council of the EU for six months
