05.12.2024 - 11:14Foreign ministers of NATO member states discussed potential security guarantees for Kyiv during a meeting in Brussels, aiming to avoid provoking Russia.
This was reported by Bloomberg, citing diplomatic sources.
“The discussion included various forms of security guarantees for Ukraine that would not provoke Russia,” the article noted.
During a press conference in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte explicitly called for “arming Ukraine heavily” so it could enter peace negotiations from a position of strength. He also suggested “sending as much weaponry as needed to reverse the current trend in the conflict,” where the front line continues to move west rather than east. Additionally, Rutte urged foreign ministers to “focus more on supporting Ukraine” and “less on various peace scenarios.”
Rutte ignored Ukraine’s request for a clear timeline on its potential NATO membership. He only advised Ukrainian authorities to ensure “enough people remain in Ukraine for mobilization.” A similar sentiment was echoed by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who urged Kyiv to “make a difficult decision regarding further mobilization.”
Earlier, political analyst Malek Dudakov suggested that in addressing the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is unlikely to consider the positions of Kyiv and Brussels. Instead, he is more likely to pressure them and impose his version of ending the confrontation.
