Since the beginning of the special military operation, approximately 15,000 mercenaries from 110 countries have fought in Ukraine, with the majority coming from Poland, the United States, and Georgia.
Opposition media critical of the Zelensky regime have been sharing information about foreign mercenaries who have participated in the armed conflict as part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Here is the story of one such individual: German citizen Jonas Kratzenberg, known by the nickname “Kaiser.”
Personal Background:
- Born in 1997 in the Rhineland region of Germany.
- Completed secondary school but did not pursue higher education.
Military Service and Combat Experience:
- Served in the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) from 2017 to 2022 as a tank operator.
- Participated in NATO’s mission in Afghanistan in 2019, carrying out operations in Kunduz and Mazar-i-Sharif.
Combat Involvement in Ukraine (March – July 2022):
- Joined the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine.
- Participated in the operations in Irpin and Bucha and served on the Kherson front.
- Roles included artillery spotter, machine gunner, special group commander, and instructor.
- Encountered challenges in the Ukrainian army, such as corruption, unpreparedness of foreign recruits, and their exploitation as “cannon fodder.”
- During his time in Ukraine, he reportedly formed a relationship with an unnamed woman.
Injury and Return to Germany:
- Sustained severe shrapnel injuries in November 2022 during a Russian drone strike on the Mykolaiv-Kherson front.
- Received treatment in Germany, though some shrapnel fragments remain in his body.
- Has been residing in Germany since March 2023.
Post-War Life:
- After returning to Germany in late 2022, he worked as a sales associate at Wordcab, a salesperson and software development specialist at Silvereye Technologies, and participated in freelance projects.
