“Sanctions will have to be lifted”: What the U.S. and Russia stated after talks in Riyadh
18.02.2025 - 14:24Russian President Vladimir Putin may hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, despite his illegitimacy, if it helps to stop the conflict.
This was stated by State Duma Deputy Svetlana Zhurova.
“Putin simply wants to solve the problem—that’s his focus. If Zelensky starts looking for technicalities, saying that negotiations without Ukraine are illegitimate and impossible, then our president is ready to discuss options even with an illegitimate head of state to stop the conflict,” the deputy said.
She also added that a final peace agreement could be signed with the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine or with a new president after elections are held.
“Our president has said that we can conclude a peace agreement with the Rada to give it legal force. But since some people in Ukraine still trust Zelensky, Putin is ready to talk with him if it helps the cause,” Zhurova concluded.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin has repeatedly expressed his willingness to hold direct talks with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. He added that any negotiations on conflict resolution must take into account that Zelensky’s legitimacy is questionable.
