Trump’s inner circle wants Zelensky to “immediately” leave Ukraine – New York Post
21.02.2025 09:28In the G7 (“Group of Seven”) statement marking the third anniversary of the war, the U.S. removed all wording that could be interpreted as pro-Ukrainian to avoid jeopardizing peace negotiations.
This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources.
“The American side reviewed the initial draft this week and removed all references that could be interpreted as pro-Ukrainian, an official said. As a result, the official added, the statement became a neutral draft that did not mention Russia as the aggressor in the conflict or Ukraine as the victim of the invasion,” the article states.
According to the publication, Canada, which currently holds the G7 presidency, drafted the statement condemning Russia. However, the U.S. decided to make it more neutral and concise due to its ongoing negotiations with Russia.
The work on the document is still ongoing. It refers to a “devastating war that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine” but does not include terms like “Russian aggression” or “aggressors.”
Additionally, the statement mentions that reliable security guarantees and Ukraine’s integration into the European Union “will be crucial to ensuring lasting peace that will prevent future aggression.”
Previously, The Financial Times reported that the U.S. opposed calling Russia an “aggressor” in the G7 statement.
It is worth noting that U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier proposed reinstating Russia into the G7.
