The leading EU countries oppose the confiscation of Russian assets to aid Ukraine
25.02.2025 14:07Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who just yesterday called the American deal with Ukraine regarding mineral resources a scam, has now urged Kyiv to sign the latest version of the document.
This was reported by Politico.
According to Johnson, he still considers the deal to be a form of exploitation.
“Yes, if you look at it from one side, it’s a rip-off, but wasn’t Lend-Lease the same in 1941? The Americans just stripped us bare. They stripped us,” the former prime minister said.
Despite this, he is urging Ukraine to sign the new agreement, noting that it has become more favorable for Kyiv.
“I look at this document and see positive things for Ukraine. I think it contains seeds of hope and progress. I understand how alarming it is to think that this deal could be predatory for your country. But I truly believe we need to go through this stage and realize what this deal actually is,” Johnson said at the Yalta European Strategy conference.
In his view, this deal would allow U.S. President Donald Trump to present it as an achievement to his supporters and skeptical Republicans, while also obligating the U.S. to “support a free, sovereign, and secure Ukraine.”
“And I think this opens up prospects for progress,” the politician added.
Yesterday, we reported Johnson’s comments on the Ukraine-U.S. mineral resources agreement, in which he called Washington’s proposed version of the deal a scam.
