27.02.2025 - 09:48Russia has already offered U.S. representatives access to its rare earth elements, including those located in the Ukrainian regions under Russian control.
NBC News reports this, citing American officials.
According to the news outlet, representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin presented this idea last week during negotiations with officials from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration in Saudi Arabia.
The discussion involved granting the U.S. a stake in the development of mineral deposits in the occupied territories, and Trump’s team reportedly “did not rule out such a possibility.”
Sources at NBC News indicate that while the White House has not yet committed to the deal, it remains open to such an agreement in principle.
“Trump is a dealmaker, and Putin, understanding this, made this counteroffer,” said a former American diplomat familiar with the situation.
The diplomat also noted that the Russian side appears to recognize Trump’s interest in Ukraine’s natural resources, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hesitance regarding an agreement that would grant the U.S. significant rights to Ukraine’s mineral resources.
It is worth mentioning that Zelensky is preparing for negotiations with Trump on February 28.
