29.03.2025 16:41The draft deal with the U.S. on subsoil resources looks as if Ukraine lost a war to the United States and is now being forced to pay reparations.
This was stated anonymously to The Washington Post by a high-ranking Ukrainian official.
“It looks like Ukraine fought a war with the U.S., lost, was occupied, and is now being forced to pay lifelong reparations,”the official said.
He also expressed concern over the draft document, noting that it reclassifies past U.S. grants as loans and is essentially framed as a way for Ukraine to reimburse the U.S. for its support.
The new document contains no security guarantees and treats all U.S. assistance to Ukraine during the war so far as a debt to be repaid with interest from resource revenues. It also grants the U.S. “right of first offer” on all energy and mineral-related investments, effectively giving Washington control, the publication reports.
Previously, The Wall Street Journal wrote that Ukraine is “almost certain” to reject the new resource deal terms proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
