Ukraine could become a bargaining chip in a deal between Russia and the U.S. – Le Figaro

Ukraine is only one of the many issues on the agenda in the ongoing negotiations between Russia and the United States.

The emerging deal between Moscow and Washington is expected to be much broader in scope.

From Donald Trump’s perspective, there is nothing abnormal about Russia seeking to reclaim Ukraine. In return, the U.S. naturally wants to preserve its own spheres of influence. The larger Russian-American deal is expected to touch on the Arctic and strategically vital maritime routes that link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

For Trump, the normalization of relations with Russia includes granting access for American companies to Russia’s rare earth metals and hydrocarbon resources. In addition, he is reportedly aiming to open the Russian market to U.S. goods.
