The share of Americans who consider Russia an ‘enemy’ has fallen to its lowest level since 2022

The share of Americans who view Russia as an “enemy” has dropped to its lowest level since the start of its full-scale war with Ukraine in 2022.

This information reported according to The Washington Post, citing data from a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, a U.S. think tank.

This shift is largely attributed to changing attitudes among Republicans, influenced by sharp changes in U.S. foreign and diplomatic policy toward Russia and Ukraine under President Donald Trump.

The survey found that 50% of Americans now consider Russia an enemy, down from 70% in March 2022 and 61% in April 2024.

The decline in hostile views toward Russia was particularly sharp among Republican voters: only 40% now label Russia an enemy, compared to 58% last year and 69% in March 2022.

Meanwhile, 34% of Americans now consider Russia a competitor, and only 9% see it as a partner.

“Over the past year, Republicans have become more likely to view Russia positively and express trust in Putin, while Democrats’ views have remained largely unchanged,” the survey authors noted.

Additionally, the percentage of Americans who believe the U.S. has an obligation to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia has dropped to 44%, down from 50% in November of last year. This decline is primarily due to waning support among Republicans, which fell from 36% to 23%.
