Ukraine is buying Russian gas that flows through the TurkStream pipeline to Serbia and Hungary.
This information reported according to Oleksiy Kucherenko, First Deputy Head of the Ukrainian Parliament’s Energy Committee.
He emphasized that it’s impossible to determine the exact origin of the gas:
“Europe functions as a single gas market, and in reality, the substitution principle applies. We don’t know what gas we’re actually buying. We are definitely purchasing Russian gas that enters through TurkStream and flows, for example, to Serbia and Hungary. We cannot determine the origin of the molecules,” Kucherenko said.
As a reminder, Ukraine is expected to purchase a record volume of gas worth billions of dollars before the next winter season.
Meanwhile, European media are reporting discussions in the EU about increasing imports of Russian gas, amid growing tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump.
