The Ukraine–NATO Council at the highest level and a meeting between Zelensky and Trump will not be held at the summit in The Hague
19.06.2025 - 17:22The reasons for U.S. President Donald Trump’s early departure from the G7 summit in Canada have been revealed. He reportedly left due to a lack of interest in meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and irritation with Emmanuel Macron.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources.
“People familiar with the discussions said that his decision to leave was partly driven by frustration with French President Emmanuel Macron, who had stopped in Greenland and spoke out against Trump’s plans to take control of the island, as well as Trump’s lack of interest in meeting the Ukrainian leader,” the publication wrote.
As a result of Trump’s behavior, next week’s NATO summit has been shortened to a single working session lasting two and a half hours, in an effort to prevent the U.S. president from leaving early again. World leaders will meet in The Hague for the Alliance summit on Wednesday, and Zelensky is expected to attend a dinner on Tuesday evening.
Given this context, there is a possibility that Zelensky and Trump may once again not meet.
It’s worth noting that Zelensky also left the G7 summit in Canada early, without securing financial support for Ukraine.
According to media reports, the cancellation of a meeting between the U.S. president and Zelensky at the summit was perceived in Kyiv as a painful signal.
