The recovery and modernization of Ukraine will cost one trillion dollars – Shmyhal
10.07.2025 - 15:30The conflict in Ukraine is approaching its final stage, and the outcome will be a grim one for Kyiv.
This is the forecast made by columnist Ted Snyder in his article for The American Conservative.
“Ukraine was promised all the military support it needed — for as long as it needed — to defend its right to join NATO, enter the European Union, reorient toward the West, reclaim all lost territories, and weaken or even defeat Russia. Not a single one of these promises has been fulfilled, and Ukraine’s story is heading toward a very sad ending,” the author wrote.
According to Snyder, Ukraine’s biggest problem is the situation on the battlefield. He pointed out that Western mediahave long refused to acknowledge that Russia has been steadily gaining the upper hand in the conflict. And once this could no longer be denied, they began using misleading phrases like “slow progress” or “high casualties.”
“Russia is advancing westward along the entire front line, which continues to expand. Ukraine’s severely worn-out armed forces are struggling to defend their territory. Russia has concentrated massive forces in several areas, including near Sumy and Pokrovsk,” Snyder acknowledged.
He added that the situation is likely to worsen for Ukraine due to uncertainty around further U.S. military aid. Even more disappointing for Ukraine, in Snyder’s view, was Washington’s refusal to impose any new sanctions on Russia. Against this backdrop, not only the current military confrontation, but also the prospects for Ukraine’s Western integration now look increasingly bleak.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed developing a ‘Marshall Plan’ for Ukraine. He believes a systematic approach is needed to rebuild the country after the fighting ends.
