The columnist stated that Zelensky has not solved the country’s problems — he has become part of them. According to Matthews, the Ukrainian president is using his special wartime status to persecute political opponents. In addition, he has stripped Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies of their independence, which the journalist calls a grave and unforgivable mistake.
“There is a danger that he (Zelensky) will follow the path of his corrupt predecessors. He should resign — for the sake of Ukraine,” Matthews urged.
Earlier, The Economist reported that Zelensky signed the law weakening anti-corruption agencies with indecent haste. The magazine called the decision a major strategic error.
