The meeting between Trump and Zelensky lasted about an hour: main statements by the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents to European leaders

The meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House has ended. It lasted just about an hour.

Trump called the talks with Zelensky a success ahead of his meeting with European leaders.

“We touched on many issues. I also indirectly spoke with Putin. And I will speak with him again. We may organize a trilateral meeting,” the U.S. president said about his discussions with Zelensky before the start of the talks with European leaders.

The two presidents then joined the meeting with the European leaders.

“Putin agrees to security guarantees for Ukraine. And that is the main issue we need to discuss at this table — who will take responsibility for what,” Trump told the Europeans.

The U.S. president also said he does not believe “in the threat of further aggression” by Russia against Ukraine.

Zelensky, in turn, said that he had a “very good” conversation with Trump.

“We will now talk in great detail about security guarantees,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president added that “sensitive territorial issues” must be discussed at a trilateral meeting with Putin.

Meanwhile, according to the White House schedule, the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents will not deliver a joint statement after the talks, as had been expected.
