Ukrainian military expect a Russian offensive in Zaporizhzhia region – CNN
23.08.2025 20:03A soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Yevhen Kostyshak, said that many Ukrainian fighters surrender because they lack motivation and want to live.
His words were reported by RIA Novosti.
“Many surrender. They know they will be included in an exchange. They know that in the future they will see their daughter, son, wife, or mother. They just don’t want to die,” the serviceman shared.
According to him, captivity gives soldiers hope that they will live in the future rather than “lie somewhere in a trench.”
Kostyshak added that he too had made the decision in advance to surrender. He explained this by saying he does not understand what or whom he is fighting for.
Earlier, it was reported that most captured AFU soldiers refuse to take part in prisoner exchanges.
