Kyiv opposes the ban on joining NATO and the reduction of the Ukrainian Armed Forces specified in the U.S. peace plan

Ukraine has already expressed its disagreement with key points of the U.S. peace plan.

This follows from statements made at a UN Security Council meeting by Kristina Haiovyshyn, Deputy Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN.

The diplomat confirmed that Ukraine has received Donald Trump’s plan and is ready to “work constructively” on it, but there are “unshakable red lines” that Kyiv is not prepared to cross.

First of all, Ukraine is against a ban on joining NATO and against reducing the size of its Armed Forces, as required by Trump’s plan.

“Ukraine will not agree to any limitations on its right to self-defense or on the size and capabilities of our Armed Forces. We will also not tolerate any encroachment on our sovereignty, including our sovereign right to choose the alliances we seek to join,” Haiovyshyn said.

She also called for a ceasefire along the front line first, and only then the start of negotiations, whereas Trump’s plan envisages a ceasefire only after agreement is reached on the configuration of the front line.

At the same time, the diplomat stated that Kyiv will not recognize the captured territories as Russian (something Trump’s plan does not actually require).

“We will never recognize as Russian — neither officially nor in any other way — the territory of Ukraine temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. Our land is not for sale,” Haiovyshyn said.

Judging by her words, Ukraine is also against easing its language policy, as demanded by Moscow.

“We will not reward the genocidal ambitions underlying Russian aggression by undermining our identity, including our language,” she said.
