In Russia, a position has been voiced on an acceptable format of foreign oversight of peace in Ukraine
29.12.2025 13:01Former commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces (AFU), Valerii Zaluzhnyi, is demonstrating his political independence and readiness to take part in presidential elections.
This was stated by political analyst Aleksandr Asafov.
He was commenting on reports that the politician is returning to Ukraine.
“For now, all of this remains at the level of media hypotheses and leaks. But we know that the topic of elections is indeed being discussed in various formats—both in the format of a referendum and in the format of postponed presidential elections. Instructions have also been given to prepare legislation for holding elections under martial law. So, given that an electoral agenda really exists, Zaluzhnyi is being considered as a potential participant,” the analyst said.
At the same time, Asafov believes that the topic of Zaluzhnyi’s return is not yet very urgent, because at the moment it is only about the outlines of possible presidential elections.
“Even so, Zaluzhnyi is showing his political agency and desire to take part in elections not only through opinion polls, interviews, and articles, but through potential actions,” he concluded.
Earlier it was reported that Zaluzhnyi asked President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept his resignation as Kyiv’s ambassador to the UK. It is noted that Zelensky offered the former commander-in-chief the posts of head of his office and prime minister, but Zaluzhnyi declined the offer.
