Hundreds of millions without external oversight: The NYT raises an uncomfortable question for Zelensky about systematic sabotage of oversight
10.12.2025 - 16:31Despite Russia’s ongoing military aggression, it is time for Ukraine to hold presidential elections.
That is the view of U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Yes, I think it’s time. I think now is an important time to hold elections. They’re using the war to avoid holding elections, but I think the Ukrainian people should have that choice,” he said in an interview with Politico published on Tuesday, December 9.
In Trump’s view, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has a chance to win again.
“I don’t know who will win. But they haven’t had elections for a long time. You know, they talk about democracy, but at some point it stops being democracy,” added the U.S. president, who is seeking to end the war in Ukraine in line with the peace plan he has proposed.
Under the schedule, Ukraine’s next presidential election was supposed to take place back in 2024, but it was postponed because martial law was introduced in the country at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Kremlin has repeatedly used this fact to accuse Zelensky of being “illegitimate.”
Since the start of Trump’s second term, discussions about holding elections have resumed despite the fighting. Trump has also called for this, but Kyiv has said such a decision is impossible. In particular, in April 2025, the Verkhovna Rada denied reports that preparations were under way to hold presidential elections.
