01.01.2026 - 18:01A 23-year-old Ukrainian man, Illya S., was detained at Warsaw’s Okęcie Airport with a radio jammer.
This was reported by Rzeczpospolita.
According to the outlet, on December 26 the young Ukrainian citizen ordered coffee and snacks, set a laptop on the table, and spent six hours in an airport café.
Such behavior aroused suspicion among airport security staff. The man was searched, and officers found prohibited signal-jamming equipment on him. The device operated in frequency bands reserved for aviation communications and navigation.
He was detained, and the next day he was charged under a provision of Poland’s Criminal Code concerning an attempted act threatening the safety of air traffic, and he was remanded in custody for a month.
Illya S. was unable to clearly explain why he needed to create radio interference at a piece of critical infrastructure.
The 23-year-old claims he lives in Canada, but did not explain why he came to Poland.
According to the newspaper’s sources, the detainee also contradicted himself in his statements: at first he claimed he was a soldier, but later said he was a businessman.
The Warsaw–Ochota District Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident.
