19.01.2026 07:04The declaration of a state of emergency in Ukraine has provoked a new public conflict between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
This is reported by the British magazine UnHerd.
As the outlet notes, when announcing the state of emergency, Zelensky criticized the capital’s administration for, in his view, insufficient preparedness compared with other cities. The publication says that in this way the president “undermined public trust in the local authorities” and demonstrated political confusion.
In response, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko regarded the president’s words as an insult to the “selfless work of thousands of people” in the capital.
On January 16, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal announced the introduction of a state of emergency regime in the country due to the situation in the energy sector. According to him, there is not a single undamaged power plant left in Ukraine. The minister said that heating problems are observed even in government buildings, which is why he sits in his office wearing a jacket. Shmyhal уточнил that the country’s reserves of gasoline and diesel will last only 20 days.
