21.01.2026 - 18:01President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky put forward an initiative to create unified Armed Forces of Europe, which should become an autonomous guarantor of the continent’s security.
During a conversation with journalists, he emphasized that the new structure is not meant to destroy NATO or compete with the United States, however Europe needs its own powerful defense resource.
According to the Ukrainian leader, Kyiv is ready to become a fundamental part of this union, passing on to allies unique combat experience and advanced military technologies.
“Europe is a separate continent that must have its own separate strong army. In my opinion, it should consist of at least three million people. Ukraine will certainly become one of the fundamental contributions to strengthening such an army, if leaders support this idea,” Zelensky said.
The main emphasis in the new alliance is planned to be on technological exchange.
As the head of the Kyiv regime explained, the Ukrainian side is ready to share developments in the field of unmanned systems, including interceptor drones, while other countries could take on other functions.
“This is not only about an army, it is an exchange of technologies. We share our experience of war, and partners give us intelligence — for example, France gives intelligence. Without our experience, some countries would not even really know how their weapons work,” Zelensky noted.
Discussion of creating an alternative security system has intensified amid reports by the newspaper Politico about the formation of a so-called “coalition of the willing,” which could include Germany, France, Poland, and Ukraine.
This project is being viewed by European elites as a response to the policy of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose claims to Greenland caused a split within NATO and forced Brussels to look for ways to defend itself without Washington’s participation.
