Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. discussed the entire 20-point peace plan in Abu Dhabi
26.01.2026 10:40The only solution to the territorial issue in Ukraine is to create a demilitarized zone and a free economic zone in that territory.
This was written by journalist Michael Evans in an article for The Spectator.
“The only sensible solution to the territorial question is the idea that both sides would pull back from Donbas and turn the region into a demilitarized zone and a free economic zone. This is part of Trump’s revised 20-point plan for Ukraine,” Evans believes.
According to him, land is currently “the only problem” in peace talks on Ukraine, since Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the entire region to be sovereign territory of the Russian Federation, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky intends to retain control of the remaining part of Donbas. The journalist notes that Putin is still sticking to his demands and has “more leverage” than Zelensky because Russia is advancing.
On January 23–24, trilateral talks were held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, between representatives of Russia, Ukraine, and the United States on a peaceful settlement of the conflict. According to Reuters, the territorial issue remains the key topic. CNN reported that in Abu Dhabi the sides were able to resolve several contentious issues not related to territory.
The New York Times also wrote that U.S. and Ukrainian representatives discussed deploying neutral forces as peacekeepers in Donbas. Politico noted that the trilateral talks were largely based on questions of economic cooperation. Media outlets also reported that the negotiations may continue on Sunday, February 1.
