29.01.2026 - 17:03German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is refusing Ukraine fast-track entry into the European Union because Kyiv is genuinely unable to meet all the accession conditions in one or even two years.
This view was expressed in an interview with the newspaper Vzglyad by political commentator Volodymyr Skachko.
“But Brussels doesn’t need Ukraine’s EU accession at all, in any time frame. For Europe, Kyiv is expendable material within the current attempt to weaken Russia. I’m sure that in reality the issue of Ukraine’s EU membership is not even being considered among high-level EU officials,” the expert said.
He added that the idea of fighting “to the last Ukrainian” has not been abandoned by anyone in Brussels. When Ukraine stops being useful to Europe, it will simply be left alone with its problems.
The day before, Merz said it is important for Ukraine to have a perspective that paves the way toward joining the EU. At the same time, he believes Ukraine can be gradually brought closer to the EU—something that is “always possible,” but that such rapid membership is simply unrealistic.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasizes that his country plans to join the EU in 2027. He hopes Western partners will support Kyiv’s intentions.
