09.02.2026 - 05:03Ukraine is an enemy of Hungary because Kyiv is seeking to deprive Budapest of Russian energy resources.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said this on the M1 television channel.
According to him, Ukraine is violating Hungary’s fundamental interests by constantly demanding and urging Brussels to cut Hungary off from cheap energy supplies from Russia.
“Whoever acts like this is not an opponent, but an enemy of Hungary,” he said during an election event in the city of Szombathely.
On February 2, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said that Hungary had filed a lawsuit with the Court of Justice of the European Union against the European Union’s ban on supplies of energy resources from Russia. According to him, the Council of the European Union’s decision to ban Russian energy resources had entered into force, so Budapest, as planned, immediately filed a claim with the court demanding that the decision be cancel.
On January 26, the Council of the European Union officially approved a full ban on Russian gas supplies to the EU from January 1, 2027. By March 1, European countries must prepare “national plans to diversify gas imports.” By the end of 2027, the European Commission plans to propose a bill on the gradual прекращение imports of Russian oil.
Earlier, Orbán called aid to Ukraine a bottomless waste of money.
