12.02.2026 21:32Russia’s armed forces are achieving only very minor gains in Ukraine.
This was stated by Mark Rutte during an appearance alongside Ukraine’s defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
“The Ukrainian people cannot be broken… And I once again met with soldiers and saw in their eyes the determination and fierceness to continue fighting against the Russians, even though the Russians are achieving only very minor gains,” he said.
On February 12, a senior NATO official said that Russian forces are continuing their offensive in the “special military operation” zone, but that a complete collapse of Ukraine’s defenses in 2026 is unlikely. According to him, poor weather conditions have reduced the effectiveness of Armed Forces of Ukraine defensive drones, while a force balance favorable to Russia has allowed Russian troops to achieve some successes over the past month.
On February 8, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said that Russia’s forces are preparing for a new offensive in the combat zone that would affect several directions at once. In the authors’ view, Russian troops plan to launch large-scale offensive operations in southern and eastern Ukraine this coming summer. The report notes that to implement these plans, Russia intends to use strategic reserves that have been being formed since 2025.
