In the West, they stated that forces advocating dialogue with Russia are uniting

There are forces in the European Union that favor normalizing relations with Russia, but Europe’s elite is resisting.

This view was expressed by Nicolai Petro, a professor of political science at University of Rhode Island, speaking on a YouTube channel.

He said that in Germany and other EU countries there are plenty of political voices calling for a new approach toward Russia, but resistance comes from “the established elite, which has too many sunk costs in the current policy.”

According to the professor, these politicians cannot distance themselves from the course pursued so far without damaging their own political reputation.

Petro believes that the more aggressive the tone of the German government becomes, the more resistance it will face from other interests within the country. Other political forces will rally against it, the political scientist added.

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said he intends to establish a direct channel of communication with Russia. He noted that it would be fully transparent for Ukraine, European countries, and the United States.
