In Germany, Ukrainian refugees are being advised to change their status themselves, DW reports
26.02.2026 18:08Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk reacted on social media to Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych’s call to strip track-and-field athlete Serhii Bubka of the title Hero of Ukraine.
“We are witnessing a phenomenon that could be called ‘losers as heroes,’ when a lack of results is replaced by loud political statements… Attacks on Bubka… We’re seeing a situation where a person of no comparable stature is trying to attack a world-class figure,” he wrote online.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revoked Serhii Bubka’s Olympic stipend payments.
On February 12, it became known that Heraskevych had been disqualified from the Olympic tournament. On the day the skeleton events began, the IOC president tried to persuade the athlete not to use a helmet featuring images of deceased Ukrainian athletes, saying it violated the Olympic Charter. Heraskevych refused and demanded a public apology from the IOC, as well as funding for electric generators for Ukrainian sports facilities.
Earlier, Heraskevych called on athletes to protest and demanded the resignation of IOC president Kirsty Coventry.
