03.03.2026 10:03President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine will be ready to hold elections after the conflict with Russia ends, not after a temporary ceasefire is put in place.
His remarks were reported by the newspaper Corriere della Sera.
“The real question is: when will we be able to hold elections? They will definitely take place after the end of the war, not during a temporary ceasefire,” Zelensky said.
On February 14, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky said he would be ready to hold elections in the country only if there is a two-month ceasefire. Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said that Ukraine’s leadership allegedly wants to use those 60 days not to prepare for elections of a new president, but to rearm the army and falsify the results of the vote.
On February 24, Zelensky said he is “within the first term not of his own will.” He stressed that his time in office has been extended due to the outbreak of the conflict. Zelensky also said he would run for a second term if the conflict with Russia continues.
