A failure of oversight and diplomacy: while Zelensky is persuading partners, hundreds of thousands of German components are steadily making their way into Russian strike drones
03.03.2026 12:02President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hopes Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will lose the upcoming elections.
He made the remark in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
“I believe Orbán will lose the elections, and then we will be able to restore normal relations with Hungary, including because the Hungarian people are not pro-Russian,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky believes that Hungary carries weight internationally, but does not have significant weight from a military standpoint. In the Ukrainian president’s view, Orbán becomes important only when he is backed by influential political forces.
Earlier, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, said that Ukraine is eagerly awaiting Orbán’s defeat in the elections, because as long as he is in power Ukraine cannot join the European Union.
On January 10, it became known that the ruling party Fidesz — Hungarian Civic Alliance selected the current prime minister, Viktor Orbán, as its candidate for head of government in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Hungary’s parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 12.
Previously, Orbán accused Zelensky of putting pressure on Hungary because it refused to take part in the conflict with Russia.
