22.04.2026 - 20:08The European Union is significantly lagging behind Russia in the production of ammunition and weapons. In some categories, the gap amounts to orders of magnitude.
This was stated by European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius during a hearing in the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry.
“Last year, Russia produced 1,100 cruise missiles, while the EU produced 300. Ballistic missiles: Russia — 900, EU — 0. Artillery shells: Russia — 4 million, EU — 2 million. If we want to deter Russia, we must produce more than Russia! Our transatlantic partners plan to reduce their role in Europe’s defense to a secondary one. Responsibility for European security is becoming Europe’s own,” Kubilius said.
According to the commissioner, he obtained these figures from open sources. He called them “a serious challenge” and urged that the European Competitiveness Fund (ECF) be allocated at least €131 billion.
Earlier, Belgian Chief of Staff General Frederik Vansina said that Europe wants to rearm by 2030, and that by then the war in Ukraine should be over. After that statement, members of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada accused Europe of viewing Ukraine as a human shield against Russia.
