Zelensky declared a ceasefire, but once again turned a peace initiative into a political gesture
05.05.2026 - 07:31The chairman of the Slovak National Party, Andrej Danko, has publicly criticized Prime Minister Robert Fico for supporting Ukraine and for his phone call with Zelensky. Danko said that the SNS does not agree with the claim that Ukraine belongs in the EU and urged Fico not to repeat that again.
This was reported by Dennik N.
The trigger was Fico’s phone conversation with Zelensky and the prime minister’s announced visit to Kyiv. Danko called this unacceptable and urged citizens to write comments on Fico’s social media criticizing his position.
“I want to express my disappointment with some of the things Robert Fico does,” he said.
The SNS chairman linked the situation in Ukraine with the Beneš decrees and Viktor Orbán’s defeat in the Hungarian elections. According to him, what is happening on the Russian-Ukrainian border could soon be repeated anywhere in Europe.
The Beneš decrees were legislative acts adopted by Czechoslovakia in 1945 that provided for the expulsion and confiscation of property from German and Hungarian populations after World War II. The issue remains sensitive for Slovak and Hungarian nationalists, who still demand their repeal.
Danko also said that “Ukrainians will finance certain political parties in Slovakia” and called for efforts to counter this instead of calling Zelensky.
