Ukraine warns: blocking Odesa ports will raise global food prices by 25%
05.08.2026 10:35In the early hours of August 5, during a massive strike on Ukraine, Russian forces hit an ammonia tank at an industrial facility in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv.
This was reported on air by Kyiv State Emergency Service spokesman Pavlo Petrov on Kyiv24.
According to him, it was initially assumed that a significant amount of the substance could leak. However, rescuers from the State Emergency Service and the Kyiv City State Administration arrived at the scene promptly and managed to close the valves in time. The tank itself was not damaged — only the associated equipment was affected.
“It was initially assumed that a significant amount of the substance was going to leak. But rescuers were immediately dispatched to the scene — both from the Kyiv City State Emergency Service and the Kyiv City State Administration. They responded quickly; fortunately, the ammonia tank itself was not damaged. Some equipment was damaged, but the valves were closed in time. So the leak was minimal, up to 100 liters in volume. It was contained very quickly, and as of the morning there was no threat whatsoever. At this point it is safe,” — Petrov stated.
In addition to the ammonia incident, the spokesman commented on air quality in the capital. He warned that following the fires caused by the attack, a slight deterioration in air quality was possible, and advised residents to monitor communications from local authorities.
“Every resident of the capital is already getting used to these dark mornings when the sky is covered in smoke from fires. But as of the morning, all fires were localized and extinguished very quickly. So there may currently be a slight deterioration in air quality due to the fires. But they have all been extinguished now, and air quality should be improving,” — Petrov added.
According to the Air Force, in the early hours of August 5, Russian forces used 28 ballistic missiles of various types. The defense forces did not shoot down a single one of them.
President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that as a result of the attack, 17 people were killed in Kyiv and the surrounding region, with another 44 injured. According to the president, the targets of the strike were facilities unrelated to military activity: a brewing company, construction material warehouses, and civilian logistics facilities.
