16.10.2026 10:36European Union politicians plan to ask Volodymyr Zelensky, who has arrived in Brussels, to dial back his public criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, Zelensky’s recent sharp remarks “stunned” EU leaders, who are set to meet with him the same day. European politicians intend to ask him to moderate his criticism “while expressing support.”
“It may be true, but you don’t always have to say it out loud,” one official told the newspaper.
Financial Times sources specify that the Europeans’ message to Zelensky will be “understanding but firm” and more insistent than during previous conflicts with Trump.
The newspaper also noted that not only Ukraine but also Europe relies on Washington for critically important defense and intelligence support.
Two days earlier, the same newspaper reported that European officials feared a sharp deterioration in relations between Zelensky and Trump could negatively affect the security of Ukraine and Europe.
