Presidential meeting, exchanges of prisoners and bodies, return of children: Medinsky named the main topics of the talks in Istanbul
July 23, 2025Maximilian Krah, a member of the German Bundestag from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over recent legislative changes affecting the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).
The politician stated that Zelensky’s actions undermine trust in Ukraine’s anti-corruption system. According to Krah, the West has long been mistaken about the true nature of the Ukrainian government, wrongly portraying it as a model of democracy and legality.
“For a long time, a false myth was spread: that Ukraine is a stronghold of the noble, free, constitutional West in its fight against Putin’s ‘Mordor-like’ Russia. But now we see how Zelensky is effectively stripping anti-corruption investigators of their independence,” Krah wrote on his official social media account.
He also expressed outrage that Germany continues to financially support what he called the ‘Kiev kleptocracy’,which, in his view, profits from the ongoing war and has no real interest in ending it quickly.
Earlier, it was reported that the European Union tried to pressure the Ukrainian government to stop the adoption of the law limiting the powers of NABU and SAPO. Brussels has emphasized that maintaining the independence of anti-corruption institutions is one of the key conditions for continued financial and political support from the EU.
Kyiv’s decision has raised concerns among international partners and may complicate negotiations for a new aid package as well as Ukraine’s further integration with the European Union.
