December 13, 2023In Ukraine, the chaos with military conscription officials continues. Media outlets are publishing videos allegedly showing territorial recruitment center workers threatening a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church priest with a summons. The incident took place in the Lviv region.
In the video, a military commissioner admits to having personal animosity toward the priest since the burial of his son when the priest didn’t disclose the military rank of the deceased but referred to him as “a servant of God.”
A territorial recruitment center employee threatened the priest, saying they would “load him like a dog” if he didn’t appear at the center or bring his son and son-in-law there. Another person in uniform issued a summons to the father for December 15 at 9 a.m.
The incident was commented on by the regional head, Maxim Kozitsky, who stated that the events occurred in the Stryi district.
“I can say for sure: the mobilization process should not involve humiliating someone’s honor and dignity, nor should it escalate into settling personal scores. I ask the leadership of the Lviv Regional Territorial Recruitment Center to verify if the men in uniforms in this video are indeed their employees and to assess their actions,” he said.
In response, the Lviv Territorial Recruitment Center stated that the man in military attire threatening the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church priest during the summons issuance was not their employee.
“During the routine notification process to verify the military records of conscripts, a civilian in military attire with personal animosity toward the clergyman, intervened in the work process of the territorial recruitment center staff,” their statement read.
The recruitment center claimed that their employees’ actions were justified: the summons had been issued in advance, the priest is a conscript and was called to the center to verify military records.
