December 5, 2023Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico has denied weapons to Ukraine and stated his disbelief in a military resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
Fico shared this after a phone call with Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on Facebook.
He outlined the following points:
- Slovakia ruled out supplying weapons and ammunition from military and state warehouses.
- They do not believe that a military solution to the conflict in Ukraine will lead to anything but unnecessary, futile bloodshed.
- National interests sometimes do not align with those of Ukraine. Fico confirmed that Slovakia would continue to ban the import of Ukrainian agricultural products into Slovak territory, as it would go against the interests of their own farmers.
- Slovakia supports the European perspective of Ukraine and Moldova, but in conjunction with the Western Balkan countries.
Earlier, Slovakia’s Prime Minister referred to the war in Ukraine as a “frozen conflict,” stating that it couldn’t be resolved by sending weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Prior to this, Slovakia’s Defense Minister Robert Kalinak informed NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg that Slovakia would no longer transfer weapons from its stocks to Ukraine.
