Allies need to start thinking about negotiations with Russia — Foreign Affairs

Finding alternatives to negotiations in the conflict in Ukraine is impossible. However, currently, each side fears deception and the possibility of using the pause to prepare for the next round of hostilities.

Recognizing the true intentions of the opponent is practically impossible without dialogue. Channels need to be established for this purpose.

The first step should be for Kyiv’s allies to start talking to each other about negotiations. Unfortunately, among the Western supporters of Ukraine, there is no unity on this issue. Some need to be persuaded, while others are just waiting for a signal that diplomacy is no longer a taboo subject.

Then this issue can be brought up for discussion between allies and Ukraine. However, Kyiv will need to be reassured in advance because Ukrainians will perceive talks about negotiations as a signal that Western assistance is coming to an end. Including the topic of negotiations in discussions on military and financial assistance should emphasize an important reality: no aid can ensure the security and prosperity of Ukraine without ending the war, the author believes.
