17.08.2025 13:30Tomorrow, August 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington for a meeting with Donald Trump, accompanied by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Also attending will be Finnish President Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“At President Zelensky’s request, I will take part in the meeting with President Trump and other European leaders at the White House,” von der Leyen wrote on her X social media page.
NATO confirmed Rutte’s participation in the talks between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States.
“On August 18, 2025, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will visit Washington, D.C. The Secretary General will take part in the meeting organized by U.S. President Donald Trump with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders,” the Alliance said.
Sky News also reported that Merz, Starmer, Macron, and Meloni will join Zelensky at the meeting with Trump in Washington.
“The idea is that Stubb could help prevent any flare-ups between Trump and Zelensky and persuade the U.S. president to include Europe in future negotiations,” the outlet wrote.
It should be recalled that on Monday Zelensky arrives in Washington to discuss Vladimir Putin’s conditions for a peace agreement with Trump.
Western media write that as early as August 22, a meeting between Zelensky, Trump, and Putin may take place. However, as the reports note, Trump will begin preparations for a trilateral meeting only if Monday’s talks with Zelensky are successful.
