November 21, 2023The current member of the Ukrainian Parliament was served a notice of suspicion for attempting to offer a bribe in bitcoins to the head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Reconstruction and Development of Ukraine.
This was reported by the press service of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
He allegedly sought a decision to allocate funds from the fund for mitigating the consequences of Russian aggression to repair buildings at a university where the deputy still holds the position of rector (though the terms of his contract are suspended).
While his name wasn’t explicitly mentioned, Ukrainian Telegram channels suggest it’s Andriy Odarchenko from Kharkiv (part of the “Servant of the People” faction and a member of the committee on anti-corruption policy). In 2021, Odarchenko was elected rector of the State Biotechnological University.
He reportedly offered the head of the State Agency a bribe equivalent to 8% of the funding volume and transferred a portion of this amount – 0.39 bitcoins, which at that time equated to $10,000.
The arrest of this Ukrainian MP for bribery isn’t the only news today about the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and members of parliament, according to Alexey Goncharenko.
“Other investigative actions are taking place right now. To be continued,” Goncharenko writes. He speculates that the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine aims to showcase its efficiency on the day of voting in the Parliament regarding the bill on increasing the Bureau’s staff.
